Individual needs vary when coming to therapy, sessions usually occur weekly or fortnightly for a regular period. The frequency and number of sessions you will need is dependent on your individual needs. After working together and assessing your needs, your psychologist will discuss the best way forward for you, and together you can arrange the most convenient option for you at Paper Crane Psychology.
First sessions are all about meeting and getting to know each other and hearing what has brought you to see your psychologist, in a confidential and non-judgmental environment.Your psychologist will discuss how they will work with you and how the therapy process will transpire Any questions that you have can be brought up with your psychologist, there are no bad questions.
If your feel that you might want to have a first session via Telehealth or on the telephone that can be arranged as well.
Children and adolescents that are being brought to therapy will typically skip the first session as the psychologist would meet with the parent/s, to discuss the situation that has lead you to engage a psychologist. This first session also enables the psychologist to gain background information, that will be important when developing a strategy for supporting your child/teenager.
A standard therapy session is 50 minutes.
Therapy involves a relationship of trust, where a safe space is created to talk about personal concerns. Therapy can involve talking therapies and working in a collaborative way to explore your concerns, and develop greater insight and awareness about yourself and your experiences. Therapy can also involve expressive therapies, which are non-verbal ways of communicating your thoughts and feelings, such as play therapy and art therapy. Therapy is a deeply personal process so when you go to therapy you and your psychologist will work together to develop the approach, which will be most helpful for you.
Paper Crane offers therapy to children from toddlers to pre-teens, teenagers and adults. We also work with couples and families. If your child is younger than 5 years old we will be mainly working with you in the sessions as the primary care giver.
